
FOUNDER, CHAIRMAN & CMO
Dr. Michael Byrne is the founder of Dova, with over 30 years of experience as a practicing physician. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at Vancouver General Hospital and UBC and serves as the Director of the Interventional Endoscopy Fellowship at VGH.
Dr. Byrne specializes in ERCP, EUS, interventional endoscopy, optical biopsy, colon cancer, pancreaticobiliary disease, and IBD. He has extensive experience in the medical device and biotech sector. He has published extensively in the field of Artificial Intelligence and is in great demand as a speaker on the global stage. He is lead editor for the recent textbook "AI in Clinical Medicine" from the world's largest medical publisher, Wiley. He is often described as one of the pioneers in bringing AI to gastroenterology.
With a strong research background, Dr. Byrne has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and presented more than 200 abstracts at international meetings. He holds a doctorate degree from the University of Cambridge for his work on Helicobacter pylori and Cyclooxygenase. After working in the UK and Ireland, Dr. Byrne completed a fellowship in Interventional Endoscopy and worked at Duke University Medical Center before moving to Vancouver in 2003. Dr. Byrne is an avid football (soccer) fan, his team being Everton. He is also a classically trained singer, and spends his free time skiing, doing CrossFit or cuddling with his cats (and wife)!
